The School of Health Sciences Fribourg has contributed to the first international pragmatic clinical trial assessing osteopathic care. The CUTIEs Trial was designed to investigate the effectiveness of the manual components of osteopathic care in reducing crying times in unsettled infants.
The project has developed shared experiences in collecting data across 3 countries with different legislations, and in different languages. It associated the HES-SO (Switzerland) with the University College of Osteopathy (UK) and the Southern Cross University in Australia.
An important objective of the study was to show the profession’s ability to run high quality international research, with the potential to inform osteopathic practice and health policies worldwide. The project, supported in part by an internal fund from the HES-SO, involved setting up a practitioner-based research network capable of recruiting and collecting clinical data in accordance to EU good clinical practice standards. The study obtained approval from the relevant ethics commissions in the three countries involved, and took place between 2021 and 2023. A scientific article describing the results is currently under review.
